Housing is in short supply and new construction has become very expensive. This is making housing unaffordable and leaving people homeless. Many different agencies and nonprofits are trying to help solve this multi-pronged, complicated issue.
N&R Publications creates informative and solution-based stories to encourage dialogue and awareness about this issue, as well as to celebrate those working on bold and affordable housing solutions.

We believe in housing that is affordable for all. CHIP is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation serving Butte, Glenn, Tehama, Shasta, Sutter, Yuba and Colusa counties. We assist low-income and rural disadvantaged residents, seniors and others who lack financial resources or knowledge to improve or provide adequately for their housing. Our organization has built more than 2,600 housing units in our seven-county service area and is acknowledged as an innovator and leader in rural housing issues.

An innovative new program in Sacramento County will give 300 families a second chance at stability and a fresh start. Approved in 2014, California Senate Bill 855 allotted $20 million for housing support to homeless CalWORKs recipients. Sacramento County was one of 42 counties that applied, and one of only 20 accepted, for this transformative program.

Habitat for Humanity is widely known, but not everyone understands how the organization works. Many don't realize that Habitat needs to raise a significant amount of capital as cash-in-hand before beginning a build. While volunteers are plentiful, large cash donations are not. Habitat's retail location called ReStore sells new and gently used home goods to help raise funds to support the organization's work.
