The effort to develop and maintain independence for Iowans with developmental disabilities depends largely on Direct Support Professionals. DSPs assist people with disabilities in a variety of ways: basic care like feeding and bathing, transportation, shopping or help getting and holding a job. There is a severe shortage of DSPs, however, so there are meaningful jobs, with regular but flexible hours, available all over the state.
