Inequitable and punitive school discipline policies are creating a “school-to-prison” pipeline, where students are being prevented from achieving their full potential. The Restorative Schools Vision Project helps schools address this crisis by introducing restorative justice and social-emotional learning practices. Restorative justice favors problem solving over punishment by addressing the underlying reason why an injustice was committed and “restoring” people to their true selves and community. It emphasizes that everyone counts, not just those in power (teachers/administrators) but the students, too. It also incorporates awareness of different cultures and perspectives as reasons why someone may behave a certain way.
